Wanna Be THE Hitman? It’ll Cost You.

XBL GamertagIn the world of online gaming, having a memorable name is something every gamer wants. Long time gamers have often held onto the same name for a decade or more, sometimes becoming a brand in their own right. Newcomers, on the other hand, will struggle to find a cool name that hasn’t been taken in multiple variations, and often resort to translating words into leet speak or appending numbers to their tag, just to get their name. For obvious reasons, a Gamertag like Hitman carries some weight to it. Exactly how much will be determined Feb-19-09 18:26:14 PST.

Originally taken by Xbox Live beta tester Chris Graziano back in 2002, he has decided to put the name up for grabs on Ebay. There’s still over 8 days to go in the auction, and the bidding is already up to $350 US.

I was one of the first people ever to create a gamertag and was fortunate enough to snag up the most popular word used in a gamertag of all time, Hitman. This auction would be perfect for any gamer looking to have the most popular gamertag of all time, or maybe for a video game professional looking for a classic gamertag.

Of course, there could be a downside to being the one and only Hitman. Every XBL gamer is hoping that the person who buys it has more money than skillz, so that they can claim they capped Hitman. If the purchaser doesn’t live up to his name, expect a LOT of screen grabs of Hitman being pwned.

UPDATE: The auction was pulled from ebay. As of this writing, there hasn’t been any reason given.

  1. How is it even possible to transfer a gamertag??

All I can think of is, you’re both on the phone together, and when Hitman cencels his account he tells the winner so and the winner signs up toute-suite, hoping that no one else has nabbed that name in the 5 or 10 seconds it takes to create a tag…

    Is there something I’m missing?

    1. When you cancel an XBL account, the Gamertag is locked. I imagine to transfer, the seller would have to remove all connection to his current email and downloaded content (if any), then set it up with a new email address that both seller and buyer have access to.

From that point, the seller would have to tie to himself. I imagine it’s a bit of a convoluted process, mainly because Microsoft wouldn’t technically support it, as there are people out there that go phishing for Gamertag information (much like email phishing), which is a real problem (but no that common). There have been instances when people have actually given out Gamertag info and someone else has hijacked them.

In essence, the seller would be permitting a legitimate version of hijacking a Gamertag.

how easy is it to change the tag you currently have in live?

        1. Just go to “Change Gamertag” and change it. They charge you for it though, which is pretty lame, though this is done to avoid people abusing the system.
